With aging and stress, deep creases may form between the nose and mouth, the jawline may grow slack and jowly, and folds may appear around the neck. A facelift can “set back the clock,” improving the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of your face and neck.

Unfortunately, the development of wrinkles, laugh lines and jowls are an unavoidable part of the natural aging process. The good news is that today, modern surgical technology allows you to erase and minimize these visible signs of aging with a facelift (rhytidectomy). A facelift can also slow down the aging process. The even better news is that a facelift can deliver results that actually appear quite natural, provided that the procedure is performed by the right cosmetic surgeon. There are basically two options: A mini-facelift and a full facelift. The decision to do one verse another will depend on a number of factors that will be discussed at the time of your consultation. Board certified plastic surgeon Ben J. Childers, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Riverside Plastic Surgery Associates will go over all options and explain the surgery in detail during the consultation.
How is a Facelift Performed?
There is no need for a patient to stay in the dark on what happens during a facelift. If you are undergoing the procedure, you have a right to know everything that takes place. With that in mind, here is a summary of the facelift procedure.
After the anesthesiologist (who is a medical doctor) administers general anesthesia, the surgeon begins by making small incisions, starting in the hairline at the top of the ear, then down the earlobe and to the back of the ear. These are discreet locations that prevent any scars from being visible to others. Next, sagging facial skin is removed, loose facial muscles are tightened and the skin is redraped over the face and sutured into place. That is the process, from beginning to end!
When done skillfully, this procedure creates an appearance of youthful, smooth skin, free from wrinkles, lines and sagging – and it does it all without giving anyone the impression that the patient has undergone surgery. For the majority of our Riverside facelift patients, people are unable to tell the person has had surgery unless the patient told them personally. This is another reason to choose Dr. Childers as your facelift surgeon; he prides himself on helping patients achieve the most natural looking results possible. Other Facelift Surgery Details
Because it is an outpatient procedure, a facelift can be completed in a matter of hours, at an accredited surgical facility overseen by a licensed medical staff. For Riverside Plastic Surgery Associates patients, the procedure takes place at either Premier Outpatient Surgery Center or Riverside Community Hospital.
After facelift surgery, patients can expect a recovery time of approximately ten days. The day after the surgery, the dressings are removed from the face; the sutures are removed approximately 7 days after the surgery. As for swelling and bruising, they should be expected, but they gradually subside within the first two weeks as well. Patients are prescribed oral medication to alleviate discomfort.
A facelift surgery can cost around $6,000 or so. The price tends to be higher in Southern California. Fortunately, a facelift in Riverside with Dr. Childers is priced significantly lower and comes with an optional patient financing plan.

Eyelid Lift Surgery
The blepharoplasty procedure removes fat, excess skin, and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids to correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes—features that make you look older and more tired than you feel, and may even interfere with your vision. More on Eyelid Lift Surgery
Wrinkles and sagging skin around our eyes can make us look tired and older than we feel. Puffy pouches of fat in the upper or lower lids create an exhausted appearance, and excessive skin in the upper eyelid can even interfere with vision.
Riverside plastic surgeon Dr. Childers can help you look dramatically younger and more rested through eyelid lift surgery. If sagging eyelids are interfering with your vision, then an eyelid lift can widen your visual field, creating less strain on your eyes.
Eyelid Lift Plastic Surgery Procedure Information
Eyelid lift surgery (blepharoplasty) is done on an outpatient basis with general sedation. The incisions are made where the natural crease should be in the upper lids and below the lash line in the lower lids, and excess fat and skin are removed. If only excess fat is present in the lower lids, it may be removed through an incision inside the lower lids with no external incision or scar (called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty).
After Eyelid Lift Plastic Surgery
All sutures are usually removed within 4 to 6 days. Initial mild discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Bruising and sensitivity to light last at least a week or two, and swelling progressively disappears in 1 to 2 weeks. Eye makeup can be used after sutures are removed, and contact lenses can be worn when comfortable – usually within 7 to 10 days.
Complementary Plastic Surgery Procedures
Additional procedures that may enhance the result of an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) are Brow Lift or Facelift.
If eyelid lift surgery is being done to improve the field of vision, insurance may cover upper lid surgery. Otherwise, eyelid lift is considered cosmetic, and therefore is not covered by insurance.
The specific risks and the suitability of eyelid lift can be determined only during your free consultation with Inland Empire plastic surgeon Dr. Childers. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk, but major complications are rare.
In a forehead lift, the muscles and tissues that cause furrowing or drooping are removed or altered to smoothe the forehead, raise the eyebrows, and minimize frown lines to create a more animated appearance.
More on Brow Lift
Many people seek brow lift surgery to correct the appearance of frown lines, which are deep vertical furrows between the eyebrows that cause us to look worried or stressed out. Another common reason for brow lift surgery is to correct a sagging forehead or brows that hang too low and too close to the eyes, creating an overly tired appearance.
By surgically lifting the brow or forehead, Riverside plastic surgeon Dr. Childers can create a more youthful and rested appearance to the upper face, helping you to look years younger.
Brow Lift Plastic Surgery Procedure Information
Brow lift surgery is done on an outpatient basis either under general anesthesia or monitored sedation. The incisions are usually made behind the hairline. For patients with high foreheads, the incisions can be placed in front of the hairline. The operation is done using an endoscope (a narrow hollow instrument with a fiber optic light source and camera, through which the procedure is done with small special instruments.) The forehead skin is lifted and repositioned and muscles that cause frown lines are weakened. Patients return home with dressings that are usually removed on the first or second day after surgery.
After Brow Lift Plastic Surgery
Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Sutures are removed within 10 days, and most swelling and bruising is gone in 7 to 10 days.
Complementary Plastic Surgery Procedures
Additional procedures that may enhance the result of a forehead lift are Lower and/or Upper Eyelid Lift, Facelift, or other facial procedures or implants.
Browlift surgery is considered cosmetic and is therefore not covered by insurance.
The specific risks and the suitability of the forehead lift procedure can be determined only during your free consultation with Inland Empire plastic surgeon Dr. Childers. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk, but major complications are unusual.
Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury, or help relieve breathing problems.
More on Breast Rhinoplasty
People choose nasal surgery (rhinoplasty) for a number of reasons. If you feel that your nose does not fit with the rest of your face, or creates an imbalanced appearance, then you may be interested in nasal surgery. Nose reshaping is also appropriate if the nose has been disfigured due to an injury, birth defect, or disease.
After listening to your expectations, Dr. Childers carefully sculpts the nose to produce a more attractive appearance that is in better proportion to the rest of your face. The result is a nose that fits your face and looks completely natural.
Rhinoplasty Plastic Surgery Procedure Information
Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under local or general anesthesia.
After Nasal Plastic Surgery
After nasal surgery, you return home with an external cast or splint in place. The nose may be packed for 24 to 48 hours, and the cast or splint is usually removed in 7 to 10 days. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. The majority of swelling and bruising subsides progressively over 2 to 4 weeks. External sutures (if any) are removed in 4 to 6 days, and internal sutures will dissolve.
The semifinal result of a nose reshaping procedure is evident in 3 months. The final result is evident in 12 to 14 months. If you need to improve your breathing, correction of a deviated septum (septoplasty) may also be appropriate.
Complementary Plastic Surgery Procedures
An additional procedure that may enhance the result of a rhinoplasty is a chin enlargement to create a more symmetrical appearance.
Rhinoplasty is not covered by insurance if being done for cosmetic reasons. If, however, the nasal deformity is due to recent injury, insurance coverage may be available. Pre-authorization information can be obtained from your insurance company.
The specific risks and the suitability of nose reshaping can be determined only during your free consultation with Inland Empire plastic surgeon Dr. Childers. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk, but major complications are unusual.
